Problem
What is SQ3R, and how does it help me study?
Step 1
S=SURVEY To survey a reading chapter in a textbook, you would: - look at the title and subtiles of the section you will be reading - look at the graphics and read any applicable captions (graphs, paintings, pictures, etc.) - look at the highlighted words - read the summary or the review if there is one - read the questions at the end of the chapter (this sets a purpose for reading)
Step 2
Q=QUESTION - turn the titles and subtitles into questions - ask questions - ask yourself, "What do I already know about this subject?" - ask yourself, "What did my teacher tell me about this subject?"
Step 3
R1=READ - read with a purpose (look for the answers to questions) - chunk your reading (read a paragraph at a time or 1" of print, pause, ask yourself what you have just read) - reduce your reading speed - stop and reread parts that you didn't understand or aren't clear about
Step 4
R2=RECITE - take notes while you read - say it out loud! This very important, it gives you 300% more learning! - underline or highlight important parts (if the book isn't yours, use sticky notes to save places)
Step 5
R3=REVIEW - read the notes you have made - periodically reread material - write down any specific questions you have so you can ask your teacher - ASK FOR HELP FOR ANY PARTS THAT ARE STILL CONFUSING
